Man, made "in image and resemblance" as his Creator, skilled with reasoning, may choose as place for his activities, the place where the proper circumstances and the conditions have been established, securing that whatever expectations he may have can be accomplished. It is therefore evident, that man and natural environment are meanings closely related. It is not a casual event that the most of civilisations throuhout the ages developed in areas naturally chaismatic, such as the Greek area. If, thus, we consider that the Greek area is a large treasury of natural benefits, Evia may be undoubtedly characterized as a showcase gahtering massively what is best available from this freasury. When an area, in its most part, combines the beauty of the greek island and the charm of the covered with green mountain, may be naturally characterized as an earthy paradise. Evia, and in particular its southern part, as its is commonly accepted, is one of the few corners of our homeland, characterized by such a privileged combination. In this site we'lll deal with one of the most beautiful but also the most significant historical area of Evia island. This is the area of Elymnia community which, combining, as the most areas of Evia, the mountain with the sea, received in its bossoms, during thousands of years of its well-known, at least, history, excellent civilizations keeping untouched its greek identity. Such privileged areas like this one of Elymnia community are more than before obliged to show not only their natural benefits but mainly their long history and the role they played to keep the grandeut of Hellenism. The only and unrepeated role always played by our homeland through the ages in the deverlopment of civilisation on our planet, today tends to degenrate and be crossed out from the memory not only of the foreigners, but the Greek themselves. It is something we should not allow it to happen. Even the smallest corner of the place where we live has its own history. It has some signs showing that from here in very moment of the history some alive and creative Greeks passed accompanied with all öthe wishes and the curses that our race carries. They discoverd, created, fell in love, loved, hated and stained their earth in their own blood but also in their enemies' blood. In a few words, the wrote the history of their own land. It is the history we don't have any right to forget because it consists an integral part of the extensively compound meaning called Hellemism. Even the smallest village is obliged to know about this history and present it, at a first chance, together with all the other natural or artificially made beauty which, of course, should be co-existent to attract the tourists interest. This is exactly the aim of the today's community of Elymnia. And when we say "Community" we don't mean only the authorites but all the people of our area. The people, who, fortunately in our own place verify the meaning of the world, made a true jewel and amulet of the sacred and holy traditions and heritage of our race. |
